We are glad you are here! Welcome to the KYC web site where I hope you will find the information and motivation you are looking for from our Blue Hill based Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club. We encourage you to explore the links to various club activities including our busy racing schedule, the active social calendar and, of course, the sailing school. The Kollegewidgwok Sailing Education Association is a not-for-profit organization that manages our sailing school that is open to members, their families and to non-members seeking first class, safe sailing instruction. The history of KYC dates back to the early 1920’s and is fascinating reading (so is the club newsletter, The Waterline!). This has always been a seasonal yacht club dedicated to sailing instruction for young people, racing among one design boats, and general recreational sailing, cruising and power boating. We are fortunate to be located in one of the most scenic and welcoming harbors on the coast of Maine. Visitors are welcome; we have gasoline, diesel and ice available at the club dock and moorings available for visiting yachts. Our club is led by a volunteer Council, its officers and by Manager Dave Danielson. Dave is supported by his able KYC dock staff and the sailing instructors of KSEA. Our members know that the staff is on duty 7 days a week from mid-June to Labor Day from 800h‘til 1800h and is here to serve you, your families and friends. You can reach KYC via VHF on channel 9 or by phone at 207-374-5581. Come join us for a great summer boating season! We’ll see you on the water or, as the House Committee says, at the “best little club house in Maine”! Rich Gurin,
Kollegewidgwok Yacht ClubThe club was founded in 1924 by Seth Milliken for his children and their friends, and its first members were mostly under the age of 15. From that time to the present, the club has put "teaching children to sail" very high on its agenda. In 2003, the flourishing Junior Program was spun off into its own nonprofit, the Kollegewidgwok Sailing and Education Association (KSEA), with a mandate to teach sailing to as many children of the Blue Hill Peninsula as possible, whether or not their parents might be members of the club.
Location
44° 24' 35" North — 68° 33' 52" West The Club house and facilities are located on the eastern shore of Blue Hill Harbor at the head of Blue Hill Bay, on the down-east coast of Maine. See NOAA Chart #13316
Facilities
The Club has guest moorings that may be reserved in advance with a small deposit or credit card number phoned to the club 24 hours before arrival. After that, guest moorings are given on a first-come-first-served basis. Visitors should hail the club on Channels 9 as they approach the harbor. Some moorings can hold a heaver boat than others, and the dock staff will attempt to match the two. We have four moorings of or own and sometimes members make others available. If none is available or suitable, the dock staff can indicate areas of the inner or outer harbor that will be the best for overnight anchoring. There is a facilities fee charge for use of the club by visiting yachts, which is collected by the dock staff at the time of arrival. The club is located on the eastern shore of Blue Hill Bay Inner Harbor, easily spotted by its long docks and yardarm flagpole. It is about a mile from the village of Blue Hill, and thus walkable; local drivers often pick up walkers. At the right tides, the village is accessible by water. There is a grocery store that can deliver to the club dock for a fee. (Merrill & Hinckley, 374-2821.) The club sells gas and diesel as well as ice, oil and water. It is open most days in July and August from 8 A.M. to 5:45 P.M. Launch service is usually available during those hours, though not always. Visiting yacht clubs or cruising clubs ought to contact the commodore well in advance to arrange for mooring and (if wanted and available) rental of the clubhouse. The cost of renting the clubhouse for an evening dinner is $350 for clubs, plus cleaning deposit, from which is subtracted the wages of a staff member who must be on the premises during rental. The commodore can suggest local caterers if needed, and kitchen facilities come with the rental.
