OPTIMIST NEWS
For all those clamoring for off-season news about Optimists, this page is for you. Here, youll find a bounty of information about the KSEA Opti fleet. Put aside that NYT bestseller and read on
What Fleet?
The KSEA Opti fleet stands at 33. The breakdown is as follows:
16 Club owned school boats
3 Club owned racing boats
8 Privately owned school boats
6 Privately owned racing boats
On the Mend
Five Optis are out for fiberglass repair this winter. This is the lowest number for end-of-season broken boats in the last several years thanks to the huge effort made by our sailing instructors to teach and oversee proper boat handling. Their hard work has made for better sailors, extended the life of some of our oldest club boats, and saved KSEA several hundred dollars.
Because More is More
At present, we have just enough boats for the beginner/intermediate junior sailing program. There is no room for damage and repair without doubling up sailors. This isnt a new problem, we just had a lot of luck last season. The school fleet is made up entirely from member boat donations and privately owned boats.
With so many sailors now at the Opti B and intermediate level, families are encouraged to consider purchasing a boat for their children. KSEA has negotiated an excellent price from the McLaughlin Boat Yard (for more information please ***). Also, if you have a fallow Opti in your garage or barn and might consider donating it to the Junior Sailing Program, please know that your gift is tax deductible at fair market value.
Mark Your Calendars
For those lucky enough to be in the Blue Hill vicinity the weekend of June 4, join us for the Second Annual Move the Optis from Mr. Foxs to the Floats Day. Messrs. Modisette, Modisette and Morris can attest this is a fun-for-all experience. In keeping with tradition, Ill sign up Mary Alice Hurvitt because shes not here to say no.
Exciting Volunteer Opportunity
Be one of the ants who move the picnic and join this important KSEA committee. We operate under the austere name of Boats. Truth be told, its a committee of one right now. But think of what two might do!
Basically, we make sure there are enough Optis for all sailors in all sessions, and that these boats are maintained, repaired and stored. Because we dont yet have on-site, off-season boat storage, volunteers for this nuts and bolts job are needed to help move boats in Blue Hill after everyone has gone home and/or comes back.
Beyond the appeal of helping out a good organization, youll find this work builds biceps and bone density. For the ambitious, the job is similar to how Samuel Pepys got his start. You can imagine youre supplies admiral of an elite flotilla or superintendent of a large naval shipyard. To find out more, telephone me at (207) 374-2082.

OPTIMIST PURCHASE
Here is a quote from McLaughlin for a KYC fleet purchase of Optimists. It is a little confusing, but Spencer Wiberley (spencer@optistuff.com) knows our situation and is happy to answer questions. You can download the formal price quote below. He explained it this way to me in an email:
The special KYC price is based on the number of buyers we actually have by the spring. This is probably the most confusing part of the deal. Worst case scenario with 3-5 units sold, we are looking at this price.
